LES MUSICIENS:
Dynamic and innovative, Duo Kırtıl, comprising twin sisters Arzu and Gamze Kırtıl, has become one of the most impressive piano duets of their generation. Arzu and Gamze Kırtıl’s international career was launched in 2000 with a recital debut at Chopin Festival in Paris. They have since then established themselves on the International music stage, attracting plaudits and wide praise for their exciting and sophisticated performances, where they enthuse audiences with their scintillating interpretations of the piano repertoire.
Born in Istanbul, Arzu and Gamze are graduates of Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris/ Alfred Cortot, Conservatoire National Régional de Musique, de Danse et d’Art Dramatique, Perpignan and Hacettepe University Ankara State Conservatory where they were each awarded the French Government scholarship, Concertist diploma and Gold Medals. Celebrated pedagogue Prof. Tulga Cetiz and Germaine Mounier, the most acclaimed teacher of her time, were among the pianists they studied with. The duo won first prize at the Medoc-Aquitaine Piano Competition, in Bordeaux, France and were rewarded again at the 10th International Young Pianists Competition, in Rome, Italy.
Arzu and Gamze hold and has performed an extensive repertoire for two pianos and four-hands. The Duo have played as soloists with orchestras such as the Presidential Symphony Orchestra, Antalya Symphony Orchestra, Bursa Symphonic Orchestra, Bilkent Symphony Orchestra, Philharmonia Britannica and performed recitals at such notable venues as St John’s Smith Square, London; Smolny Cathedral, St. Petersburg; Aya Irini, Istanbul; Salle Cortot, Paris and Philharmonie de Luxembourg.
Their first album Piano Duos, released in 2013 focuses on wide variety of musical styles, including premiere recordings of Wintermorgen in Istanbul by Fazıl Say and Three Pictures for Two Pianos by Maria Lord. The album received a 5-start review in Andante Music Magazine.
Keen to support new music and up-and-coming composers, the sisters have been the muses for pieces specifically written for and dedicated to the duo. Always creative, they have been the catalyst for many projects for both festivals and one-off events such as 2+2: A Cross-Cultural Marriage for 4 pianos with a world premiere of commissioned work Teamwork I by W. Gangkofner, Respect to Saygun for various instrumental combinations, including premieres of works for 2 and 3 pianos and The Little House by Catherine Kontz.
Arzu resides in Luxembourg, and Gamze in Ankara. They continue to pursue their careers as soloists and independently collaborate with several chamber music ensembles, in addition to their duo work and live radio and television performances. In parallel, both Arzu and Gamze maintain an active role in tutoring and inspiring the new generation of musicians.
